Donald Hewitt, of Ira, Vermont, stands accused of embezzling nearly $400,000 from the town of Ira, where he had served as town treasurer. According to authorities, Hewitt began stealing funds from the town coffers in 2003 to pay his personal bills. The thefts apparently continued for six years until he resigned last November. He had served as town treasurer for some 32 years. Investigators are continuing with their audit before formal charges will be filed. Nevertheless, Hewitt has reportedly confessed to the embezzlement which is thus far estimated to be $382,357. According to reports, Hewitt did the town bookkeeping out of his own home and maintained the records there.
