Lisa Jones Durham, 40, of Petersburg, Virginia was sentenced yesterday to 3 years in prison for embezzling some $144,000 from Virginia Commonwealth University where she had been employed as a coordinator for a community outreach program. According to authorities, over a three year period, from April 2006 to May 2009, Durham misappropriated from the university program, which provided rent, utility and prescription-drug assistance to chronically and terminally ill patients. Durham pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement in late July. Prosecutors alleged she used the misappropriated funds by obtaining checks made out to herself under her maiden name, Lisa Jones, to pay for her own rent and utilities -- including power, water, phone and cable.
