ALBANY, New York — The former fiscal officer of two taxpayer-funded Bronx charities has been sentenced to two to six years in prison for embezzling more than $500,000 from them over eight years.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, whose office prosecuted the case, says 64-year-old Clement Gardner used the organizations "like his personal piggy bank."

Gardner pleaded guilty in February to grand larceny.

The related nonprofits are the Christian Community Benevolent Association and Christian Community in Action.

The latter group received Medicaid funding to provide home health services to the needy.
Justice Steven Barrett also ordered Gardner to repay $560,000.
