Trial Begins Today For Iowa Bookkeeper Accused Of Embezzling $200K From Hospital

The trial begins today for Tammy Brandt, 48, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who is accused of embezzling more than $200,000 from the Mercy Medical Center Foundation, where she had been employed as a bookkeeper for 28 years. Brandt was charged with first-degree theft last march after prosecutors alleged she had stolen the money over a 3 year period. Brandt allegedly cashed checks made out to the hospital for her own benefit. Her husband, Barry Brandt, was reportedly fired last year from his deputy sheriff's job assigned to courthouse security for being "inattentive to his duties."
