April Leigh Matthews, 39, and Jeff Matthews, a couple from Montpelier, Idaho, were accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from a non-profit organization in a civil lawsuit filed yesterday in the First District Court. April Matthews, who was hired as a bookkeeper for The Luke Commission, a non-profit Christian organized to provide medical and humanitarian aid to southern Africa. The lawsuit charges fraud, unjust enrichment and breach of fiduciary duty on the part of Matthews and her husband. The non-profit was founded by Dr. Harry VanderWal and his wife Echo. According to the lawsuit, April Matthews embezzled "virtually all of the monies from The Luke Commission and JLZ Enterprises, as well as the VanderWal's personal accounts while they were on their annual trip to Swaziland last year. April Matthews was able to re-activate an old e-mail address with the unwitting help of the non-profit's web host and allegedly forged checks to her husband, Jeff, according to the lawsuit.
