Southern California Physician To Pay $2.2 Million To Settle Medicare Fraud Charges

Paul Arnold Lessler, 70, of Corona del Mar, California, will pay the government $2.18 million as part of a settlement over healthcare fraud charges. Lessler plead guilty to criminal conspiracy and healthcare fraud last year for filing false claims of giving patients respiratory treatments between 2002 and 2006, according to prosecutors. Lessler, an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist who was the owner of University Pain Specialists, allegedly paid kickbacks to others who referred patients to his practice. He was also stripped of his medical license by the California Medical Board after his guilty plea.
