Gregory "John" Katopodis, 61, former Birmingham, Alabama City Council member and Jefferson County commissioner, was indicted Friday on 98 counts of mail and wire fraud. Katopodis is charged with looting a charity for needy children as his "own person piggy bank" to pay credit card bills, personal travel overseas and apparent gambling expenses. The charity, Computer Help for Kids, founded in 2000, was desgined to refurbish used computers for the benefit of children in Jefferson County. According to the criminal complaint, Katopodis' fraud ocurred between November 2001 and June 2008 where he is alleged to have stolen at least $250,000 by writing checks, transfering cash and making more than 50 ATM withdrawls. Katopodis has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
