Viktor Savtyrev, 29, of Old Bridge, New Jersey, was charged Monday with extortion and making cyberthreats to the company that laid him off last week. Savtyrev who was employed as a systems administrator for New York City-based Third Avenue Management, a mutual fund company, until November 5th, allegedly vowed to enlist cyber-criminals from Belarus to cripple the $15 billion firm's computer network if officials failed to meet his demands for more money, better medical coverage and "excellent references," according to the federal complaint. At the direction of investigators, an employee of the company recorded a threatening phone call made by Savtyrev, enumerating his demands again.
