Former Illinois Treasury Worker Sentenced To 30 Months For $750K Theft

Debra Kay Kirby, 54, of Taylorville, Illinois, and a former employee of the Illinois state treasurer's office, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for stealing some $750,000 from the state. Kirby, who was indicted for the theft last April, had been employed by the state from 1973 until 2006 when she retired. According to prosecutors, Kirby set up a bank account in October 2005 under the false name, "Debo Craft," and transferred money from state coffers into that account. Prosecutors also contend that she returned all but $263,000 in an effort to cover up the theft. She had plead guilty to wire fraud and money laundering charges in August and agreed to make restitution.
