North Carolina Pastor Pleads Guilty To Embezzling $290K From Church

Wendell Johnson, 59, and the former pastor at the First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, pleaded guilty yesterday to embezzling some $290,000 from the church. Johnson, who was charged with 9 embezzlement counts, stole the money between 1989 and 2005, according to prosecutors. Church members asked for leniency and he was placed on 5 years probation and given a suspended sentence. He also paid back $120,088 as a down payment on his restitution.

Read the story here, here and here.

This is a pretty light sentence considering the amount and duration of the crime, in my opinion.
