Illinois Healthcare Company Self Reports Possible Fraud, Pays $36 Million To Settle
Condell Health Network, parent corporation of Condell Medical Center, a 283-bed hospital in Libertyville, Illinois, agreed last week to pay $36 million to settle charges of filing false claims for reimbursement after self reporting the possible fraud. The company avoided a False Claims Act case filed against it by paying the fine. The self reported potential violations involved three improper arrangements with its physicians: below-rate office space; improper loans; and reimbursements without proper written agreements. The settlement amounts to a consent decree whereby the company neither admits nor denies any wrongdoing.
