North Dakota Woman Sentenced In Embezzlement Case

Melanie Jane Zimbelman, 43, of Towner, North Dakota, was effectively sentenced to 6 years in prison for embezzling some $477,000 from Northern Livestock Auction, where she was employed as a bookkeeper until late last year when she was put on administrative leaving pending an investigation by the company and law enforcement. Zimbelman was arrested May 23rd after a 3 1/2 month investigation by local police and charged with 3 counts of felony theft. She plead guilty to 2 Class B felony counts in a plea deal which also required her to make restitution of $477,000. Zimbelman was also sued in civil court by Northern Livestock Auction to recover losses which resulted in a $632,000 judgement, plus interest filed against Zimbelman. The thefts took place over a three year period, according to reports. The embezzlement nearly bankrupted the company which is currently struggling to stay solvent.
